How to choose a multimeter for electrical work in Kenya

For anything connected to mains in Kenya, buy a True-RMS meter rated at least CAT III 600V. Expect KES 1,800–6,000 for a competent UNI-T and KES 18,000–45,000 for a Fluke. The premium buys input protection and a CAT rating that has actually been tested — not a more accurate reading.

Almost any digital multimeter will read 240V correctly on a bench. What separates a KES 2,000 meter from a KES 35,000 meter is what happens when the meter is across a fault.

CAT ratings are the safety specification

Using a CAT II meter on a distribution board is how meters explode. Note that unbranded meters frequently print a CAT rating they have never been independently tested against — the marking on the case is only as trustworthy as the manufacturer.

The functions worth having

  • Voltage AC and DC, current, resistance, continuity with a buzzer. This covers most work.
  • True-RMS. Non-negotiable for solar, inverter and drive circuits.
  • Low impedance (LoZ) mode. Dissipates ghost voltages so you stop chasing readings that are not real.
  • Capacitance and frequency. Useful for motor start capacitors and variable-speed drive faults.
  • Temperature via a K-type probe. Genuinely handy for finding overloaded joints.

Do not overlook the leads

Fused, shrouded leads with finger guards are part of the safety rating. Worn or unshrouded leads on an excellent meter are still dangerous, and cheap meters usually ship with the weakest leads in the package. Budget for a better set if the meter will live in a distribution board.

What to buy

  • Apprentice or second meter: a True-RMS UNI-T at CAT III 600V, around KES 2,000–7,000.
  • Working electrician: a Fluke 117 or equivalent at CAT III 600V with LoZ, around KES 32,000.
  • Solar and load testing: add an AC/DC clamp meter — measuring current without breaking the circuit is the only practical way to check a live load.

Common questions

What does the CAT rating on a multimeter mean?

It describes the transient voltage spike the meter's input protection can survive. CAT II is for socket-outlet circuits, CAT III for distribution boards and fixed installations, CAT IV for the supply side and metering. It is a safety rating, not an accuracy rating.

Do I need True-RMS?

Yes for any modern installation. An averaging meter reads correctly only on a clean sine wave. On an inverter output, a variable-speed drive or an LED lighting circuit it can read 10–40% low. Kenyan installations increasingly contain all three.

Why does my meter show voltage on a disconnected wire?

That is a ghost voltage — capacitive coupling from an adjacent live cable inducing a reading onto a high-impedance input. Meters with a low-impedance (LoZ) mode dissipate it and show the conductor's real state.
