Counterfeit and grey-market power tools are common in Kenya, and the failure mode is not usually a tool that does not work. It is a tool that works for four months and then fails, with no warranty route and no spares.
What actually protects you
- A physical address. A shop you can walk into is a shop that has to see you again. This is the single strongest signal available.
- A printed receipt with a KRA PIN. It is your warranty document and your proof of purchase. A seller who will not issue one is telling you something.
- A named service agent. "Two-year warranty" means nothing without an address where the warranty is honoured. Ask who services it and where.
- Stock you can see. A seller who holds stock has capital committed to the brand. A seller who orders after you pay does not.

A seller who answers all five without hesitation is a seller worth buying from, whoever they are.

How do I tell a genuine Makita from a fake?
Check the moulding quality and the data plate: genuine tools have crisp, evenly moulded seams, a serial number, and a printed model code that matches the manufacturer's catalogue. Counterfeits usually get the colour slightly wrong and the cable noticeably thin. Buying from a seller with a physical shop and a warranty route is more reliable than any visual test.
Is it safe to buy tools on Jiji or Facebook?
There is no checkout, no stock verification and no recourse if the item does not arrive or is not what was pictured. If you do buy that way, meet in person, inspect the tool, and get a receipt with the seller's business details.
What is an ex-UK tool?
A used tool imported second-hand, usually from the UK or Japan. Some are genuine bargains and some are worn out. Buy ex-UK only if you can test it under load first, and never expect a manufacturer warranty on one.
